Customized Drug Rehabilitation for Women
At Serene Beginnings, we recognize that some people are more comfortable opening up around their own gender. Some women struggling with substance abuse have a history of abuse or harassment from the opposite sex. Others simply feel more comfortable surrounded by other women. If that’s you, we encourage you to look into our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) which features gender-based process groups, so you can feel at ease while working through the issues that led to your addiction.
Addiction and Recovery for Women Is Different from Men
Men and women often face unique challenges with addiction and their process of recovery. Women in rehab:
- Often have more addiction-related mental health concerns
- Have different barriers to treatment
- Progress faster in addiction than men
- May benefit from different types of recovery support than men
This is why a solid plan for treatment and recovery must take into consideration these important gender-specific differences. At Serene Beginnings, we understand and address these individual needs by offering separate process group therapy for men and women.
What is Treatment Like?
Our facility offers several kinds of treatment including:
- Partial hospitalization
- Intensive outpatient
- General outpatient
Our gender-specific therapy takes place in our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). This program meets five days a week, for five hours a day, Monday through Friday. The morning sessions are co-ed, focusing on essential life skills for a successful recovery, such as communication, conflict resolution, financial planning and more. In the afternoon, we separate into gender-based therapy groups where women can comfortably talk through the issues their struggling with, surrounded by other women who understand what they’re going through.
We encourage you to seek a program that accommodates gender-specific treatment for substance abuse. Not only because it may feel more comfortable to discuss emotional events but also because men and women experience addiction differently. For instance, did you know that women are more likely to suffer from physical pain than men, making them more likely to use prescription painkillers? Women are also more rapidly addicted to amphetamines than men on average.
What Factors Impact Addiction In Women?
Biological gender differences go beyond the obvious ones. Although both men and women can abuse the same substance at the same rates, the outcomes they experience may differ significantly. Some factors that impact addiction in women include:
- Bodyweight: Women naturally weigh less, which means it takes a smaller amount for them to become under the influence. They don’t need as much of a drug to get high or become impaired.
- Body enzymes: Men’s bodies have more enzymes that help them metabolize substances faster than women. As a result, women experience substance abuse more quickly.
- Mental health: Symptoms of mental health, like anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression, are more common in women.
Addiction is not discriminatory and can happen to anyone. However, your treatment program should be customized to acknowledge them. With gender-specific differences accommodated, patients tend to stay in treatment longer, which increases the chance of a successful recovery.
